Inventor Wilson Greatbatch Turns 84

Consul B. John Zavrel (left) with Dr. Wilson Greatbatch on the occasion of his 84th birthday, showing him the latest addition to the "ELEANOR & WILSON GREATBACH COLLECTION": the original painting 'The Flaming Heart'. The work of art was created especially for the Collection by the successful German painter BIRGIT SEWEKOW from Leverkusen, out of admiration for the life work of the world-known Clarence inventor.

With this gesture, Birgit Sewekow joins other American and European artists in donating their works of art -- sculptures and paintings -- the the Museum of European Art's collection honoring not only Wilson Greatbatch, but all inventors in general.

Works of art by well-known European artists like Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Kurt Arentz, Helga Tiemann, Jean Carzou, Renate Stendar and others are now available for rent at the Museum. The value of most of the works is between $ 300 - 1,200.

The fee is only $ 20 for 3 months, plus a deposit.

 

One of the works available for rent at the Museum of European Art: a color woodcut from Salvador Dali's series DIVINA COMEDIA.

Buffalo Painter Shalumov in Moscow

The Buffalo painter Binyamin Shalumov (right) at the opening of his recent exhibition in Moscow. With him is Edward Kolakowski, the Cultural Attache at the US Embassy in Moscow. The exhibition opened on April 25, 2003 and ended on June 1, 2003 -- the artist's 69th birthday.

 

Binyamin Shalumov posing with some of his 84 paintings shown in Moscow. Several of the works have been previously exhibited at the Museum of European Art, including the work "9-11: Manhattan-Moscow", now in the collection of the US Ambassador in Moscow.

A pair of bulls in bronze by the prominent German sculptor KURT ARENTZ are among the works of art presented in the exhibition. 

Paintings and sculptures on the theme 'Nature and Wildlife' by artists from Utah, California, Germany and Western New York: ViviAnn Rose (Utah), Pat Roberts (California), Kurt Arentz and Jan Künster (Germany). From Buffalo area: James McAndrew, Leonard Rusin, Cynthia Kelley, Paula Borkowski, Mary McAndrew Stephen, Curtis Wright, Brenda Piccione, Kathleen Kelly and Dr. Elizabeth Doherty.

EDGAR DEGAS, an acclaimed French master with an innovative style and distinctive composition, befriended MARY CASSATT, the only American accepted by the Impressionist Group. She was a member of the Paris avant-garde and a 19th century feminist.

Cassatt's art brought a new woman's perspective to familiar places: the theater, drawing room, garden, and studio. Cassatt represented children and women without sentimentality but with deep awareness of their complex psychology. Learn how this dynamic artistic due exuded remarkable synergy in their art.

 


A SNOW OWL COMES TO CLARENCE

 

James McAndrew from Endicott, New York was one of the artists attending the opening of the exhibition 'NATURE AND WILDLIFE' at the Museum of European Art in Clarence.

His entry, a woodcarving of a Snow Owl, on which he worked on and off for three years, was among the several special works of art which captured the interest of the visitors. The owl has been entered into the upcoming competition at the State Fair in Syracuse.

The original oil painting 'FACE OF THE 20TH CENTURY' by the American painter Dr. Margaret Stucki (Idaho) was the winner of voting by visitors to the Museum of European Art at the exhibition 'At the Hermitage' which ended in July, 2003.
